The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday that the inaugural event will take place in 2027 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The IOC originally announced that the games would begin in 2025. However, the road to the games will begin later this year.

The first annual Esports World Cup occurred last July and August in Riyadh. Significant prize money was awarded for games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Street Fighter. Team Falcons won the top prize of $7,000,000 in 2024.

It remains uncertain whether shooter games will be included in the Esports Olympics program, which the IOC has stated must align with Olympic values. Previous eSport exhibitions at Olympic events have featured games such as StarCraft II, Street Fighter, Rocket League, and NBA2k.

A six-person , co-chaired by experienced IOC member Ser Miang Ng and Saudi sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, will determine the games for the 2027 event.

IOC were informed in Paris that the Esports Olympics will happen every two years starting in 2025 (now 2027), featuring “physical, simulated, and electronic games.”
